Do I need to be in great shape or have previous kayaking experience to join one of the trips?
For most day tours, a beginner or someone who has never kayaked before would feel comfortable. Although these trips are not considered strenuous or physically demanding, you must be capable of a couple of hours of moderate exercise. Double kayaks are more stable and can be great for those who would like to share the paddling with a family member or friend.
The multi-day trips can be more strenuous (if the winds are up) and some are deemed beyond beginner. In the registration package, a number of questions pertaining to your kayaking experience, medical conditions and general health are addressed. In the past, people who were beginners but wanted to increase their skills and self confidence before attempting a multi-day trip, have taken Adventuress’ Paddle Canada full day course. This enabled them to build up their repetroire of strokes, safety knowledge and to practice wet exits and rescues before joining us. Others have increased the amount of paddling they do on a weekly basis and some have even taken up sessions at their local gym to build upper body strength!
Then again, people who have never kayaked before have joined Adventuress for a 4 day tour and did just fine. What one person considers exciting on the water, another person can feel very challenged. It comes down to your adventure quotient level, your abilities and your self confidence. Adventuress always checks the wind, weather and tidal conditions before embarking on any tour or multi-day trip. We want to keep you safe, yet winds and weather can provide a venue that can challenge you and, at the same time, leave you feeling exhilerated at what you have accomplished!
But in general, it is best to be of average physical health, have a sense of adventure, and a willingness to be flexible and adjust to Mother Nature’s schedule. Before each trip, your guides will go over the basics of sea kayaking and all safety and equipment use. We are always willing to listen to and address any questions or concerns in order to provide you the best wilderness experience.
How much paddling is done every day?
The trips average between 3 to 5 hours of kayaking per day on the multi-day tours. This paddling time will depend on the tour type, the group’s comfort and energy level, and the weather conditions. We stop for a break, snack and stretch every 1.5 to 2 hours.
What is included in my kayak adventure package?
Lots of fun, spectacular scenery and …a top-of-the-line Seaward or Necky fibreglass kayak, lifejacket with whistle, paddlefloat, pump, tow rope, paddle, spray skirt, waterproof bags to keep your personal belongings dry, hearty and healthy meals, snacks and drinks, all camping gear except sleeping bags and pads (these can be rented for a nominal fee if needed), first-aid and safety equipment, all group gear (stove, dishes, pots and pans, tarps, etc.), trained, professional and personable guides, camping and launching fees. A detailed list and welcome package will be sent to you upon registration.
What will I do every day?
Although every trip varies according to the location and type, each day is generally filled with a combination of kayaking, hiking, photo opportunities, wildlife viewing, and savouring delicious meals. There is even some time for beach combing, sun tanning, swimming, and relaxation.. and oh.. maybe even a nap before appy hour.
What kind of food do you serve?
Adventuress’ guides are good cooks! The menu consists of fresh vegetables and fruits, BC salmon, and lots of vegetarian choices. Hearty breads and buns, cheeses, pancakes, savoury appetizers, and yummy desserts all add to the delectable meals. If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, just let us know on your registration form so we can accommodate you. Note: Due to an increasing number of people with dietary restrictions, Adventuress is implementing an additional fee. We feel that the time going to specialty stores, preparation, cooking separately, and increased expense of these foods, warrants this. Thank you for your understanding.
Will we be threatened by any wild animals?
We will be kayaking and camping in the wilderness; home to bears, cougars, wolves, whales, and sea lions. Therefore, our guides will instruct you in all the precautionary measures that we need to take in order to ensure the safety of the group and still be able to enjoy ourselves. No harm has ever come to any of our guests.
Does Adventuress use environmentally friendly practices?
Yes! Adventuress prides herself on protecting the pristine wilderness that we camp in and kayak through. Pre-trip orientation includes waste management, low impact camping techniques, wildlife viewing protocols, trail maintenance, and cultural sensitivity. Please take time to read our Low Impact Activity Guidelines sent with your registration package. We endeavour to leave the wilderness cleaner than when we arrived. “Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints.” (Backpackers’ motto).
What about showers and toilets?
Although some campsites have either pit toilets or composting toilets, this may not always be the case. Your guide will explain how to mitigate any impact on the environment through practical suggestions. Your privacy will be ensured. Fresh water is at a premium, although sometimes there is a stream that we can draw water from to have a sponge bath or people go for a swim in the ocean and clean up. Please bring biodegradable soap. Adventuress includes a low impact camping document with every registration to address any environmental concerns that you may have.
